Alejandro Bustamante

In the present disc I’ve wanted to give voice to four generations of excellent Spanish composers with works written in the last half century. From Rodolfo Halffter, born in Madrid in 1900 and deceased in Mexico in 1987, to María José Arenas, who was born in Isla Cristina (Huelva) in 1983, and is therefore representative of my generation. Eight composers from four generations covering a wide range of styles and showing very different creative paths that the four strings of a violin can inspire. To prepare the recording I have enjoyed the generous support and invaluable assistance of the six alive composers, with whom I have worked hard to be able to perform their works as closely as possible as they were conceived. To them all my warmest thanks for their time and their inspiration.

A versatile musician, he excels as a soloist with orchestra, in chamber music and as a recitalist with a repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary. Winner of the Permanent Competition of Juventudes Musicales de España in two categories – Chamber Music (2005) and String Instruments (2008) – in both of which the jury unanimously awarded him first prize, or recently the « Rising Star award » of Cultura Viva, he has offered concerts in Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, United States, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay in renowned halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Christel deHaan Fine Arts Center in Indianapolis, Auditorio Nacional de Música, Teatro Monumental and Fundación Juan March in Madrid, Palau de la Musica Catalana and Auditori in Barcelona, Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Auditorio in Zaragoza, Brandenburger Theater in Brandemburg, Sala Tlaqná in Xalapa, Instituto Cervantes in Brasilia or Teatro Solís in Montevideo, amongst others. In 2010, with pianist Enrique Bagaría with whom he forms a duo, he recorded his first CD for Columna Música with works by César Franck, Eduard Toldrà and Olivier Messiaen. Highly committed with contemporary music, and particularly with Spanish composers, he rediscovered and performed at the composer’s request Joan Guinjoan’s Violin Concerto, after almost 30 years since its first and only performance in its premiere. Born in 1986, Alejandro Bustamante has received an international music training, first in Madrid and Indiana and later in Zaragoza and Berlin, under Sergio Castro, Anna Baget, Mimi Zweig, Rolando Prusak, Sergei Fatkulin, Latica Honda-Rosenberg and Nora Chastain, amongst others, and in chamber music with the Casals, Quiroga and Artemis Quartets, and with Eberhard Feltz.
